Monterey County's most popular newspaper distributed free at 1,000 locations every Thursday
The mission of the Weekly is to inspire independent thinking and conscious action, etc.
As the largest circulation newspaper in one of the most spectacular counties in America, Monterey County Weekly has long been recognized for its thoughtful, provocative and engaging coverage of news, arts and entertainment. Founded in 1988, the newspaper has received scores of California and national newspaper awards over the past 25 years. Good journalism has proved to be good for business too, as Monterey County Weekly today out-circulates the national-owned daily papers in the market.
By almost any measure Monterey is an incredibly desirable market. The circulation area of Monterey County Weekly includes Big Sur, Pebble Beach, Carmel and Carmel Valley, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Seaside, Marina north to Moss Landing, plus Salinas and the expansive Salinas Valley. With a growing state university (CSU Monterey Bay), expanding marine science exploration in the Monterey Bay, the evolving Fort Ord area, and regional impacts from Silicon Valley, the county is in an explosive time of growth and transformation.
Every Thursday, Monterey County Weekly delivers insight to our readers and offers advertisers access to the most highly sought after demographic in the market. We have become a media organization built for the 21st century.
Since our early days, the Weekly has become a recognized leader for our journalism and community service. We even went online back in 1996.
While the reporting is almost entirely local, Monterey County Weekly was the only newspaper in the national alternative newsmedia to send a reporter to the middle east to cover both the Desert Storm war in the early '90s and the Iraq war in early 2003. Our commitment to in-depth coverage of news, arts and entertainment has been recognized nationwide, presenting strong investigative reporting, diverse stories about local arts and entertainment, and for delivering stories important to the people that live and work in the community.
In 2011 and again in 2012 we were honored as one of the best weekly newspapers in California from the California Newspaper Publishers' Association (First Place, General Excellence, large circulation weekly division in 2011, second place in 2012). We have won over 85 local, state & national awards, for Public Service, Ad/Graphic Design, Investigative Reporting, Overall Writing, Opinion Writing, and Arts & Entertainment reporting.
Working in partnership with the Community Foundation for Monterey County, the Monterey County Weekly Community Fund has raised and donated over $2,850,000 since 2000 (look for The Big Give! every November at www.montereycountygives.com), with key support from the David & Lucille Packard Foundation and Neumeier Poma Investment Counsel.
Our commitment to the community includes investment into our building infrastructure. We were the first newspaper in the country to have 100% of our power generated from solar energy (2007) and the first Existing Building in the tri-county area to obtain the US Green Building Council's LEED PLATINUM certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (2013).
